Medicine Hat News

School’s out, your kids have more energy than a swarm of bees and you’ve gone to every conceivable playground in the city. Twice.

Medicine Hat’s Be Fit For Life Centre is giving youth some new pop-up options for the rest of the summer, bringing physical activity to the places many of them already are.

“There’s not a lot of free programming in Medicine Hat; physical literacy is such an important part in childhood development,” said Paige Callaghan, the centre’s project assistant for the new venture. “This way we’re able to reach more kids. This is a great way to do it.”

Called PLAY Days — standing for physical literacy and you —the free program targets youth aged 6-12, and runs weekdays starting July 16. Be Fit For Life staff will lead participants in 45 minutes of structured games, then let them loose for 45 minutes to play with a barrage of equipment brought from the college.

Parents are encouraged to pre-register by calling or emailing Callaghan (403-580-5181 or step_sportwellness@mhc.ab.ca), but registration forms will be available on-site as well, so you could just drop by and hope there are still spots available.

Every Monday (July 16-Aug. 21) from 10:30 a.m.-noon, the program will run at Saamis Rotary Park in South Ridge. On Tuesdays (July 17-Aug. 21), it’ll be at Ross Glen Town Centre from 10:30-noon. Wednesdays (July 18-Aug. 22) will be from 10:30-noon at Central Park, and Thursdays (July 19-Aug. 23) will run from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Family Leisure Centre’s outdoor playground.

Friday sessions will take place in rural areas. The first will take place July 20 from 1-2:30 p.m. at the Irvine School playground. Watch the Be Fit For Life Centre’s Facebook page for future rural information.
