105 days in jail for man who tried to steal purse while high on meth

prevell@medicinehatnews.com @MHNprevell A Medicine Hat man was given a sentence of 105 days in jail for an attempted purse snatching while he was high on methamphetamine. Originally charged with attempted robbery, 26-year-old Cody McAdam pled down Thursday at the Medicine Hat Courthouse to an attempted theft, as well as resisting a peace officer. According to the agreed statement of facts, the incident occurred June 10, when a woman and the accused were travelling on a city bus. The woman got off the bus, and the accused followed. He proceeded to try and take her purse, and she resisted. The woman was pushed to the ground but managed to get up and run away with her purse to her home where she contacted police. The accused proceeded to walk down the street, until he found an unlocked vehicle, opened it and sat down inside. Police located him in this vehicle, and he resisted arrest by pulling his arm away and other attempts to not be handcuffed. The accused admitted his memories of the evening were foggy, and he had been under the influence of methamphetamine. Due to time spent in custody, he was granted 39 days credit toward his sentence. He will also serve a year of probation so he can attend for assessment and counselling. With the accused’s record, the Crown said the sentence could have been higher — but for the early guilty plea and the desire to get help. Defence counsel told the court the accused is “scared” by his actions that day, and that drug use has led him to commit a crime like the attempted purse snatching. The accused is currently taking steps to contact treatment centres so his release from custody will immediately be followed by treatment. 12
