Aurora Cannabis has taken off its first crop at a recently completely mega production facility, while construction in its even larger production centre in Medicine Hat will be underway soon.

A company operational update to shareholders early this week states its Aurora Sky facility in Leduc has produced its first cannabis crop on June 28. After another crop in staggered production is cultivated in several weeks, the company will formally seek Health Canada inspection toward sales licence certification. That 800,000 square-foot growing and production plant is expected to produce 8,000 kilograms per month of cannabis for the Canadian medical and recreational-use markets, as well as international medical market.

The update also says a sales licence has been issued for the company’s Aurora Vie production facility in Pointe-Claire, Que. The facility is “now in full commercial operation” and will be able to produce 4,000 kg per year of high-quality cannabis by October 2018, when Ottawa has announced legalized marijuana will take effect.

Locally, plans to build a 1.2 million square-foot facility in Medicine Hat, known as Aurora Sun, are proceeding quickly. Excavation at the site in the Box Springs Business Park is “75 per cent complete,” the statement reads.

“The considerable experience gained through the construction of Aurora Sky, the acquisition of Larssen Ltd. and the establishment of facility design and engineering division Aurora Larssen Projects, as well as the business-friendly climate in Medicine Hat, are anticipated to expedite completion of the Aurora Sun project”

Last week the Medicine Hat municipal planning commission approved the development permit for the facility under new zoning regulations.

Site stripping and grading got underway in April with the permit issued under the former zoning of “business industrial.”
