For the second year in a row a former Rattlers athlete is using a national program to get a leg up in her burgeoning coaching career.
Courtney Henry, who finished her last season with the women’s basketball team at nationals, was named last week as one of 12 apprentices chosen for the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association’s Female Apprentice Coach Program.
Henry will apprentice under head coach Clayton Nielsen.
“I’m so excited to be a part of the Rattlers basketball program for another year,” Henry was quoted as saying in a press release Tuesday. “It will be a change from being on the floor but I’m looking forward to seeing the game in a different light on the sideline.”
The Montana guard was known for her basketball IQ with the Rattlers. In the release, Nielsen said “… it provides the opportunity for Courtney to be a strong role model to the young female athletes in and around Medicine Hat.”
Kaity Letwiniuk was among the apprentices last year, signed up to the program with then-Rattlers soccer coach Jim Loughlin named as her mentor. Loughlin did not coach the Rattlers last year.
The program is in its 14th year, created with the aim of getting more women involved in the coaching ranks.
