Medicine Hat News
Police are searching for a man after a case of shoplifting escalated to robbery Monday at a local drug store, with the suspect fleeing from police after jumping off a residence’s balcony.
Medicine Hat police report that on July 3 at 10:30 a.m., they responded to the Shoppers Drug Mart in Crescent Heights for a report of a robbery.
Police say a man entered the store, shoplifted items, and then attempted to flee. A store employee confronted the man, at which time a brief struggle ensued.
The suspect was in possession of an edged weapon at the time, which police say he brandished to the employee and threatened to use it to complete his escape.
Investigation led police to a multi-dwelling complex on the 2300 block of Hatcher Drive.
After locating the suspect on the second floor, the man resisted arrest and fled through an apartment, then jumped off the balcony to escape. Containment was set up in the area but was unsuccessful in the suspect’s apprehension.
Through video surveillance, police have identified the suspect as 40-year-old Graeme Illingsworth of no fixed address in Medicine Hat.
Illingsworth is wanted on other Alberta-radius warrants. Police ask that if any member of the public believes they have sighted Illingsworth to not approach him, and instead call 911.
