Some of Medicine Hat’s finest yards will be on display in a couple weeks during the annual Medicine Hat and District Horticultural Society’s Garden Tour.
Running for the 27th consecutive year, this year’s tour will show seven gardens around the city to local horticulture enthusiasts.
“This year we’re doing it on July 15,” said vice-president Mel Deydey. “The event showcases gardens around the city, whether it’s people volunteering their yards or someone suggesting a yard to be in the show.
“We go out and look at the yards and see if they meet a criteria of what we want to showcase, and make a decision on which gardens will make it in.”
Deydey says the group originally wanted to have eight gardens for this year’s tour, but it made sense to have a slightly shorter list.
“All of the houses are in different places around the city,” he said. “Sometimes when houses are closer together, we have added a few more to the tour — this year they’re so spread out, so there’s going to be a bit more driving involved.”
The show runs for most of the day that Sunday, with people getting to make their own schedules.
“It’s self-guided, so people can start wherever they want,” said Deydey. “It’s one of the nice things about the tour, that people can come and go to whichever houses they want to go to.
“Each house will have a representative from the Horticultural Society there, so if there’s any questions they can be directed our way.”
Deydey says the tour is a great place to learn some new tricks.
“The homeowners will be in their gardens answering questions all day,” he said. “It’s a great way to learn something new and get some new ideas for your own garden.”
Tickets are on sale and cost $10. They can be found at various locations around the city including, Blondies, the Windmill Garden Centre, the Crescent Heights Florist, the Visitor Information Centre and at the Redcliff Public Library.
