Fittingly, it came down to Brooks and Medicine Hat for the Southern Alberta Lacrosse Association’s novice division championship Sunday.
With identical 11-1 records in the regular season, the Drillers and Sun Devils knew who they’d have to get past come playoff time. Brooks had home court advantage, but in the end it was the visitors who prevailed, 5-4 Sunday afternoon.
Levi Dreger scored the deciding goal with 1:20 remaining in the final, after Brooks scored twice in the third period to tie it.
Beckett Davis had two goals, Brayden Streifel and Torren Zentner had the others and Xavier Bird got the win in goal for the Devils. Medicine Hat also beat Lethbridge 9-1 and Brooks 7-4 earlier in the weekend.
Medicine Hat had a second novice team which went 1-2 in playoffs, losing 8-7 and 5-4 to a different Lethbridge team but beating Crowsnest Pass 9-3.
Midget
Midget playoffs were in Lethbridge but no results were reported as of press time Monday night. Lethbridge’s association tweeted that their team won gold.
Bantam
It wasn’t meant to be for Medicine Hat’s two bantam teams.
At Lethbridge, the two Sun Devils squads went a combined 1-5, while Brooks wound up the champions.
Sun Devils No. 1 opened with a 12-9 win over Lethbridge No. 1 Friday night. No details were reported on the league website. But a 9-4 loss to Brooks Saturday, then a 12-5 loss to Lethbridge No. 1 Sunday ended their title hopes.
For the Sun Devils No. 2 team, the season ended after Saturday night’s final round robin game. They were downed 13-5 by Lethbridge No. 1, 18-4 by Lethbridge No. 2 then 18-2 by Lethbridge No. 1.
Brooks beat Lethbridge No. 1 10-8 in the final.
Peewee
Medicine Hat hosted the peewee playoffs but no results were reported as of press time Monday night. Brooks’ association tweeted that their team won the title.
