Medicine Hat News A spectacular first round wasn’t enough to carry Redcliff’s Ryan Werre to an Alberta Open title. At River Spirit Golf Club Thursday, Werre shot a second-straight 1-over par 73 to finish tied for sixth place. Combined with his opening-round 66, he wound up 4-under for the tournament. Calgary pro Wes Heffernan stormed to the victory, shooting a 7-under 65 to finish at 13-under, three shots better than Riley Fleming and Evan Holmes and nine better than Werre. Heffernan pockets a cheque for $5,000. Werre gets $975 for his finish. After three bogeys, Werre got an eagle at the par-5 eighth hole Thursday but couldn’t string anything together after that. He closed with a birdie —another par 5 — but the magic that put him in the lead after 18 holes didn’t materialize on the course’s four par 3’s. He was 3-under on the par 3’s on Tuesday but 1-over after that. Medicine Hat’s Dillon Batsel shot a 6-over 78 to finish tied for 23rd, while Michael Valk was 3-over to finish tied for 32nd. 8
