Medicine Hat News Medicine Hat is one of the stops for the Canada Winter Games torch relay preceding next year’s event in Red Deer. The torch will stop in the Gas City Jan. 12, 2019, barely a month before the Games begin on Feb. 15. Medicine Hat is one of 48 planned stops, though it’s not a bigger celebration stop as 22 communities will get an expanded experience. A press release states that 10 to 15 torch bearers will be chosen in each community. To nominate someone to be a torch bearer, visit canadagames.ca/2019/mnptorchrelay —the deadline to nominate is June 30. The relay dates back 51 years and begins in Ottawa Oct. 4, 2018. No athletes from Medicine Hat have yet been confirmed to compete at the quadriennial Winter Games, a youth-focused event which includes a wide range of sports from hockey to synchronized swimming. In 2015 Brock Janzer helped Alberta’s squash team win gold, while in 2011 Medicine Hat was represented by five athletes including gold medalists Eden and Kelly Murray and bronze medalist Torrin White (all in hockey). 7
