Medicine Hat News Redcliff’s Ryan Werre has come out firing at the Alberta Open. The 25-year-old shot a 6-under 66 at River Spirit Golf Club near Calgary Tuesday, the best score of the first round by a shot thanks to six birdies and no bogeys. Werre didn’t get under par until the sixth hole, but then birdied four of the next five holes. Notably, he was 3-under on the course’s four par 3’s. Calgary’s Wes Heffernan and Andrew Funk, plus Airdrie’s Riley Fleming shot 67’s and a few Medicine Hat players are also in the running. Dillon Batsel is tied for 13th after shooting a 1-under 71, Michael Valk is 32nd with a 3-over 75 and Lanny Seefried is 53rd with a 6-over 78. The 54-hole event continues today and wraps up Thursday. A total of 117 players teed it up Tuesday. 7
