Medicine Hat News For 10 straight games nobody could seem to tame the Medicine Hat Mavericks’ bats. The Mavs still put up some offence Monday in Edmonton, but their double-digit winning streak came to an end. At Re/Max Field, the Prospects earned an 8-5 win, never trailing and getting the go-ahead runs in the sixth inning. Three Mavs errors were arguably the difference, the last one coming in the three-run Edmonton sixth from starting pitcher Jaymon Cervantes. Cervantes was charged with the mistake on a Gio Villaneuva sacrifice attempt which let the first run in following a single and a hit batter. Two sacrifice flies later it was 7-4 Prospects. Villaneuva scored an insurance run in the eighth, then started a crucial 4-6-3 double-play in the ninth when the Mavs had the bases loaded with nobody out. Josh Sieglitz got the win in relief for Edmonton, which got a couple early runs off Cervantes and then managed the prolific Mavericks attack to improve to 7-7. Now 10-3, Medicine Hat remains first in the Western Major Baseball League’s West Division and heads to Fort McMurray to play the 5-9 Giants each of the next four days. For Edmonton, Daylen Calicdan singled, stole second and scored in the first. Matt Coutney tripled to lead off the second and scored. Doubles from Mavericks Jaxson Hooge and Michael Conn were part of a two-run third inning, then Carson Johnson doubled and scored in the fourth. The Prospects re-took the lead in the fourth, Percy Liu’s two-out double scoring a pair. But Medicine Hat responded in kind, David Salgueiro doubling and scoring in the fifth. 13
