Hatters are invited to head down to the Medicine Hat Police station Saturday for the MHPS’s third annual open house.

“The open house basically opens our doors to the general public for people to see what it is that happens at the police service,” Staff Sgt. Mike Fischer says of the 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. event.

If people have questions about how things work, it’s the chance to ask questions and get first-hand knowledge.

“It’s a great opportunity to interact with the police service and its members, understand that we’re just people who happen to wear a uniform,” said Fischer. “We always love to engage with the public and help tell them what it is we do.”

Police will have a range of displays up for the open house, including tactical teams, explosive disposal unit, forensic identification unit, bylaw, photo radar, traffic and recruitment.

There will also be K9 unit demonstrations at 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

“As well, we’re going to offer tours of our building every hour,” said Fischer.

Coinciding with the open house, the Medicine Hat Safe Community Association will be hosting the 10th annual Chief Earl Legacy Fund barbecue.

The barbecue will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., while at 12:30 p.m., Grade 6 students from across the city will be presented with $100 scholarships in recognition of displaying leadership skills.
