The Moose Monarchs began their American Legion AA season with a 9-5 home loss to the Great Falls Chargers Tuesday.

At Jeffries Field, the Chargers put up four runs before the Monarchs even got to the plate in the first inning and pretty much never looked back.

Matt Houlihan had a big game for the visitors, going 4-for-4 and knocking in runs in the first and sixth innings. Hat pitchers Ethan Boutkan and Wyatt Bergen each either walked or hit batters with the bases loaded to add to the damage.

Ethan Loran’s double in the bottom of the sixth gave the home fans some hope of a comeback, but while he and Tori Nelson scored in the frame, the damage was limited. Great Falls starter Derick Spring gave up 11 hits but didn’t walk anybody in six innings.

Loran and Nelson each went 2-for-3 with two runs apiece for the Monarchs. The second game of the doubleheader wasn’t finished by press time Tuesday.

The Monarchs head to Kalispell for a trio of games this weekend.

Their next home date is next Wednesday against the Lethbridge Elks.
