Medicine Hat News

Some quack — err, quick —thinking by Medicine Hat police officers Tuesday led to the rescue of a family of ducklings stuck in a drain pipe.

MHPS reported through social media that they received a call on May 22 at 10:17 p.m. about animals being in distress, and arrived to the area of College Drive S.E. to find nine ducklings stuck in a drain pipe.

Responding officers Const. Batsel and Hubbard could hear the young ducklings chirping and sprung into action —with Hubbard stripping down to his basic uniform and climbing into the sewer where he gently picked up each duckling and passed them up to Batsel.

Batsel placed the ducklings on the grass, where they were reunited with an anxious mother duck.

Police report that once the family was all back together, they waddled away from the road and back to the safety of the water.
