A guilty plea was entered Tuesday by a man who passed off a fake T4 slip to get thousands of dollars through a business’s instant-tax-refund offer.
Tyler Wells was sentenced to 90 days at the Medicine Hat Provincial Court as part of a joint submission from Crown and defence, a sentence that took into account he had received a 323-day jail sentence on other charges earlier that morning in Red Deer. The 90 days will be served consecutively to this other sentence.
The facts alleged are that police were called by the local H&R Block on March 27 due to the discovery that several people — Wells included — were using fake T4 slips to have their taxes done, and then issued money through the tax preparation business’s instant refund program.
In Wells’ case, he was issued a $4,462.32 refund.
A restitution order for this amount was ordered to pay back H&R Block/the Canadian Revenue Agency.
Further investigation by police discovered that the T4s were issued to multiple people using a business that had not been operational for a number of years.
As part of the investigation, several other individuals were charged.
