A Hatter received a nine- month sentence Thursday in relation to a string of break-ins to CP Rail vehicles where credit cards were stolen and fraudulently used around the city.

Due to time spent in custody, 44-year-old David Messervey has 58 days left to serve of his sentence, with the judge denying defence counsel’s request that the remaining time be served intermittently.

According to the agreed statement of facts, from Dec. 11-18 of last year, multiple CP Rail vehicles around town were broken into by wrecking the vehicle door handles. Items inside these vehicles were stolen, including fleet Mastercards.

A card would be used at local hotels and gas stations until cancelled, and then another vehicle would be broken into and a new card stolen.

In total, 10 vehicles were broken into, $2,000 in damage was caused, $800 worth of items were stolen, and six Mastercards were stolen.

A total of $8,599.29 was charged to the cards, while $8,211 in transactions were attempted but declined.

Messervey was arrested and identified himself in the surveillance video, alongside his co-accused Crystal Vance.

Found in his possession were CP rail keys, bolt cutters, and a stolen Mastercard.

Meth was a factor in these crimes, said the Crown, adding that it looked like the accused were being coached by a third party, but they were unwilling to provide this person’s name.
