A sentence of just more than seven months was handed down Thursday to a 26-year-old man who pled guilty to driving dangerously from a police checkstop, and multiple other charges.
Due to time already spent in custody, Brendon Webb has 67 days of his sentence left to serve, and was also given a 20-month driving prohibition.
According to the agreed statement of facts, Webb fled from police when he came upon a checkstop they had set up on Nov. 27, 2017.
In doing so, he was travelling 70 to 80 kilometres per hour in a 50 km/h zone, at times was driving in the oncoming traffic lane, and ran a red light. Police initially attempted to pursue him but stopped due to public safety concerns, and initiated alternative measures to track down the vehicle.
Police eventually located the vehicle and deployed a spike belt. They followed the vehicle into an irrigation field, where it stopped. While Webb was driving during the initial encounter, a co-accused was at the wheel during the second encounter.
These charges were originally set for trial later this year, but Webb instead pled out and was sentenced on these and charges for other incidents.
This includes his re-arrest in January after police were called due to him being highly intoxicated and yelling at day-care workers on Aberdeen Street. When police arrived, he ran from them, and struggled against the arresting officer.
As well in January, he failed to sign in with police and wasn’t living at the address he was supposed to.
Then on Feb. 26 at 4:25 a.m., police observed a vehicle with expired plates and conducted a traffic stop. Webb, the driver, gave a false name to police — which happened to be that of another person who was also on curfew conditions. After being informed of this, he told police who he really was. Police found in his possession 0.4 grams of meth and 0.3 grams of cannabis. A can of bear spray, small pocket knife, and 27 grams of cannabis were also found in the vehicle.
