Daffodils are forging through the ground making their 2018 spring entrance.

There were more daffodils shoots than you could count pushing up through the soil at the college location on Wednesday.

They are about a month later than they were a year ago and a couple months later than in 2016, but after this cold, long winter they are alive and well.

A week ago the ground was still as hard as concrete at all daffodil planting sites but this week that has slowly changed. Not all the sites were checked on Wednesday and some will be a little slower than others simply because of how the sun shines on the area and protection from the wind.

How quickly they will grow at this stage is also dependent on the weather, but The Daffodil Project is counting on them being in full bloom for its first annual Daffodil Drive celebration May 12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Medicine Hat College planting site. Everyone is welcome. Parking is available at the Cultural Centre and then walk the short distance to the daffodils and marquee.

There will be refreshments, treats, an opportunity to hear all about The Daffodil Project’s goals for this year and beyond and get some photos of the flowers.

This is also an opportunity to thank the community for its support. Many have made donations for bulbs. Others have donated equipment or the use of equipment that has allowed the project to continue to operate with every cent of donations going to purchase bulbs. The group will be taking cash and cheque donations on site May 12 and is hoping to raise enough to purchase and plant 40,000 bulbs this fall.

The following day is Mother’s Day. Make donations in honour of mothers. There will even be an opportunity to take a photo with a special daffodil frame that doubles as a Mother’s Day card. Many photos will be posted on the project’s website and Facebook.
