The federal government through the Western Economic Diversification ministry is putting $526,000 towards a planned renewable energy micro-grid at Medicine Hat College, it was announced on Tuesday afternoon.

The announcement was made at a local press conference just after lunch.

On hand were Alberta Labour Minister Christina Gray, Medicine Hat elected officials and officials from the college and economic development agencies.

Two years ago the college announced it planned to create a self-contained energy system to employ renewable energy projects that would supply power to the college.

A brief release states that the money will go toward the design, engineering and construction of the system that is set to be built this year.

It would also act as a laboratory for students studying construction, design and data analysis of green power systems.

More information will be published as it becomes available on Tuesday.

The college received $215,000 last November from the province to go towards the project. The City of Medicine Hat has said it would partner with the college to install and electric car charging station at the facility.
