Panthers, Bulldogs earn medals at indoor track provincials

By Medicine Hat News on March 6, 2018.

Ugly weather kept many track and field athletes from getting to Edmonton this past weekend, but for those who did get to the indoor provincials there was plenty to be proud of when it was all said and done.

Both the Medicine Hat Panthers and Bulldogs clubs had representation at the University of Alberta’s Universiade Pavillion, with a couple on the podium not only in their events, but in aggregate totals for their respective age divisions.

The Panthers’ Ricki Christopher, 22, won the senior women’s 3,000 metre race in 10:38.40. She added a silver in the 1,500 with a personal best time of 4:49.60. Combined, those results tied her for top spot in the senior aggregate standings.

Coach Michelle Campbell wrote that Christopher also helps coach with the Panthers, in addition to training herself.

For the Bulldogs, it was Madison Kane-Rissling with typically impressive results. The 18-year-old won high jump with a 1.46-metre clearance in the under-20 division, then placed second in triple jump (10.01 metres), fifth in long jump and eighth in the 60 metre dash. Add them up and the resulting aggregate score put her second among under-20 women.

Also medalling was the Bulldogs’ Renae Ryan, third behind Kane-Rissling in the high jump (1.31 metres) and edging her teammate out in the 60 metre dash where she took seventh.

Other Bulldogs at the meet were Madison Pullman, who had a best result of eighth in the peewee girls’ 1,000 metre run, Lexine Rodriguez Velez who competed in peewee girls and Faith Scrivener who was in the under-18 girls division.

The Panthers’ Payton Lawson also made the trek north, running the 3,000 metres in 11:33.15 to take fourth in under-20 men’s plus setting a personal best of 5:10.51 in the 1,500 metre race, good for 14th.
