ANNABELLE MARTENS

This is Annabelle, our beloved mom, grandma, great-grandma, sister and friend. After a brief battle with cancer, Annabelle left us on February 23, 2018, her benediction the words of the old hymn she softly sang, “All the way my Saviour leads me, What have I to ask beside…” She was 84 years old. Annabelle is predeceased by Menno, her husband of 57 years, and is mourned by her three children, spouses and families: Reynold (Ingrid) Martens and their children Nelson Martens (Maria Dasilva) and Reid; Lionel (Jane) Martens and their children Christie (Evan) Peters and Lindsay Martens (Matt Moore); and Janet (Norman) Woltmann and their children Laura (Jeff) Mathew, Kate (Nathan) Regier and Nathan, and great- grandchildren James, Maya, Ellis, Adeline and Levi.
How do you best describe Annabelle? Kind, compassionate, generous, considerate, selfless, humble, serene, loving, loveable and fun. She was always dressed fashionably with everything matching and her hair just right. Annabelle was our royalty and yet she wasn’t about status or titles. She loved playing the supporting role and did so effortlessly. She was the teacher’s aid, the volunteer at the local thrift store and above all, the selfless support for Menno throughout his academic career and many volunteer activities. Annabelle was always ready for that next trip to the farm, holiday excursion or countless trips to Winnipeg to visit her kids. She was also courageous and adaptable. When her husband Menno passed away several years ago, she left her dear friends in Swift Current and moved to Winnipeg where her children resided. She ventured out in her car on her charted routes to see family, attended church, ran errands or just had a coffee. Her stated goal to the end was to be a blessing to her family and she surely was. Her children and grandchildren loved to take her out for a bite or a coffee. She never said no to time out with her family or to picking up the tab. She also never missed an anniversary or birthday card which she generously stuffed with a crisp new bill or two. Annabelle laughed easily, loved life and faithfully recorded even the mundane events of the day in her diary. She chose to follow after Jesus early in life and finished well as His good and faithful friend. Being there for others, especially for her family, was Annabelle’s greatest achievement. We love you and will miss you greatly.
Thanks to the caregivers at River Ridge and Seven Oaks Hospital, and a special thanks to Alvina, Annabelle’s sister and bedside angel during her final days. Annabelle will be remembered at a private family gathering in Winnipeg. A memorial service in Swift Current will be scheduled for the spring.
“…This my song through endless ages, Jesus led me all the way.”

LESLEY CSIKANY

September 20, 1934 ~ February 4, 2018

Laszlo ‘Leslie' Csikany was born in Hungry, September 20, 1934. His father was a lawyer and his mother, a caring lady who looked after their three sons and four daughters. When Leslie finished high school he enlisted in the military but his dislike of the war and killing was not his way. Following his term in the military, he returned home. His father advised him to go to Canada in which he took the advice and landed in Halifax. Leslie worked at many jobs before making his way west and settling in Medicine Hat. There he worked at a variety of jobs until he gained employment at Maple Leaf Flour Mills working his way up to a Miller until they closed. Leslie then began work as a contractor building homes which was not to his liking, so he went to college to learn the language as well as completing a carpentry course. He then went on to build many homes in the city with finish painting as his passion. When the 80’s came there was very little work so his company moved to Ontario where there was no shortage of jobs. Leslie married late in life to the love of his life who had three small children and together they added a son to the family. Leslie loved his family and they were the love of his life. Health problems hit him with a serious heart attack at Big ‘O’ Tires which ended his career, so he became the family cook and he loved it! Life hit him hard when his eldest daughter died and six months later his wife suddenly passed away. Leslie moved to a Senior's Home when his youngest daughter passed away and found out all four sisters and two brothers in Hungary had passed away as well. He was very ill but still had a little caring left in him. This is when he met Dorothy Bowles coming back from cancer treatments. Both Leslie and Dorothy were very ill but found that caring for each other helped. Unhappy with their current living conditions, they moved to Chinook Village to make a better life for themselves. They fell in love and were married in September of 2014. Their soup kitchen was well known to anyone who needed it. Leslie learned about his ‘Irish’ wife, not only for her cooking but the love of her joking, travelling and a new family that loved him. Their love of dancing helped to created a dance club at Chinook Village which continues to this day. "My blue eyes are gone but not forgotten, as God is looking after him now". Leslie is survived by his wife, Dorothy; sons, Leonard (Penny) and family, Cory (Angie) and family; a step-daughter, Tristin; brother, Bill (Cathy) in Hungary as well as many others he never got to know; sister-in-law, Judy (Gary) Sutherland and family as well as brother-in-law, Leonard Desharny and family. A Come & Go Tea will be held at the Chinook Village in the Terrace Room, 2801 – 13 Avenue S.E., Medicine Hat, AB., on March 31, 2018, from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Your presence is your gift, flowers and cards are gratefully declined. The family wish to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital – Palliative Care staff for the excellent care they provided to Leslie as well as to the Walmart Pharmacy and staff. They also wish to acknowledge the staff at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice where Leslie received wonderful care during his final days. (Condolences may be expressed by visiting our website at http://www.cooksouthland.com) If friends so desire, memorial donations in Laszlo’s name may be made directly to a charity of ones choice. Honoured to serve the family is
