BNSF Railway will spend US$135 million on capital improvements to its Montana rail system in 2018, bringing the five-year total on capital projects to US$850 million.

The class 1 railway announced Tuesday that its capital and maintenance plan for the state will focus on replacing100 kilometres of rail, 200,000 ties and the ballast during resurfacing of 1,360 kilometres of track.

Most major work is scheduled for the western portions of the state and signalized sidings near Whitefish and improvements to the 11-kilometre-long Flathead Tunnel.

The nationwide capital budget of US$3.3 billion includes $2.4 billion for maintenance, US$100 million for track control and $300 million for freight cars and other equipment.
