A painting of “The Last Supper” has been installed in Grace Hall at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Medicine Hat, where the congregation often gathers for a meal and fellowship.
Local artist Adolf Erdmann says he used DaVinci’s “Last Supper” as inspiration.
“I tried to get close to what I thought the original was — the same colours,” said Erdmann, 79.
The painting, which took three canvases, is 12 feet by five feet. Erdmann used acrylic paints and it took about two months to complete, said Erdmann.
Painting something this large was not necessarily a big challenge. Erdmann says he just used bigger brushes bearing in mind people look at the overall picture rather than the fine details.
“You have to keep in mind that people are looking at it from a distance,” said Erdmann.
When it was finally placed in position at the church it was a big moment.
“I thought, ‘Well, this is nice,'” said Erdmann. “People have given me positive comments on it.”
Erdmann is already working on his next project. He is not embarking on his own designs but rather famous images from the past.
“My wife has a book with religious paintings. There is one with Jesus and the children,” said Erdmann. These are older paintings without copyright. This one will be five feet wide and seven feet high, he said.
