Another candidate is set to contest a coming byelection to replace retiring Saskatchewan premier Brad Wall as the MLA for Swift Current.

Stefan Rumpel will represent the Sasaktchewan NDP in the race after the school teacher won the party’s nomination Sunday over restaurant owner Shaun Hanna.

In mid-December, Wall’s executive assistant Everett Hindley won the right to represent the Saskatchewan Party when voters fill the seat vacated this week upon Wall’s officially resignation.

A byelection date has not been set.

Rumpel, a teacher at the Swift Current Comprehensive High School, had said cuts to the province’s education spurred him to become a candidate.

Possible health region amalgamation and other economic issues are important as well, Rumpel told reporters.

Also on the weekend, Sask. Party voters chose Scott Moe, MLA for Rosthern-Shellbrook, as leader. He will replace Wall as premier when he is officially sworn in.
