It was a good weekend for the Heritage Junior Hockey League’s Medicine Hat Cubs.

The team earned three of a possible four points in two road games this weekend, and took sole possession of the last playoff spot in their division.

A big part of the success was the play of rookie goaltender Josh Breznik, who learned Monday that he was named Player of the Week by the HJHL.

The 18-year-old made 112 saves during the week, including 57 in an overtime loss to Coaldale. He then made 55 saves during regulation and overtime, before stopping all four shots he faced in the shootout in the team’s 2-1 win over Strathmore Sunday.

The six-foot-six goaltender out of Coaldale now has a 6-13 record on the year, and has made 50-plus saves four times this year.

Breznik is the third Medicine Hat Cubs player to win the Player of the Week honour this year, following goaltender Martyn Clift and Noah Irvine with the honours.
