Medicine Hat elementary and high school students returned Monday after a two-week Holiday break.
Principal Shade Holmes of Medicine Hat Christian School said while the transition from holiday idleness to the daily school routine was normally challenging for students and staff alike, this year he felt everyone was ready to return.
“It depends sometimes on when their break starts and ends,” said Holmes. “This year we started school again a little bit later on Jan. 8 — so the kids by that time are ready to come back. They have had their Christmas and their break, and they want to come back and see their friends and see their teacher. I was outside just as the buses were pulling up, and in the hallway. There was excitement, and everybody seemed rested and ready to go.”
Over at St. Patrick’s School there was mixed feelings among students returning to school. Grade 4 student Colby Kirschenman was enthused and ready to hit the books, well mostly anyway.
“I am excited because I really like math, and other things like spelling and science, a little, social … I like school. I am ready!”
Classmate Abby Begin, on the other hand, admitted she was feeling the pressure of returning to school.
“I am a little nervous I won’t have as good of grades as I did my first semester,” she said.
Coming back to being in the classroom was also a challenge, she said, after the freedom she enjoyed over the Holiday.
“It’s difficult because you have just been running around for the past few weeks then all of sudden you are plopped right back in the classroom. You are back to sitting at a desk with a piece of paper and pencil.”
