Alberta Health Services has confirmed a case of whooping cough at Crescent Heights High School.
The school posted a note to staff, parents and guardians on its website Tuesday that included a letter from Lizette Elumir, south zone medical officer of health for Alberta Health Services.
The letter (which can be read in full below) advises staff, parents and guardians on precautions to take to prevent the spread of whooping cough (also known as pertussis) and protect themselves and their loved ones. Among them for anyone showing symptoms of whooping cough to stay home. Initial symptoms are a runny nose, sneezing, fever up to 39.4 C (103 F), and mild cough that gradually becomes more severe with repetitive coughing spells, often followed by a whooping sound when the child is breathing in, and/or vomiting following a coughing spell.
