Man charged with aggravated assault, arson in Bridge Street fire pleads not guilty

By Medicine Hat News on November 7, 2017.

Not guilty pleas were entered Tuesday by a man charged with aggravated assault and arson following a residential fire that sent one woman to hospital.

A multi-day trial is expected for the 41-year-old man who remains in custody at the Medicine Hat Remand Centre, with his next appearance now set for Nov. 14.

Tuesday’s appearance was originally set to be a bail hearing, but instead defence counsel entered the not-guilty pleas, saying that there is a large amount of disclosure to go through, and adjourning for a week.

Chad Stadnicki of Medicine Hat was arrested on Oct. 28, following a fire at a residence on the 1100 block of Bridge Street.

A 32-year-old female victim was taken to hospital, suffering serious burns to her body — but non-life threatening injuries. She remains in hospital.

Police also estimated that the damage sustained at the residence by the fire is estimated to be $100,000.
