The Medicine Hat High School Mohawks are Rangeland Football Conference champions — again.
Hat High won the title for the fourth straight year Friday night at the Methanex Bowl with a 24-12 win over the Brooks Buffalos.
“What a hard-fought game that was,” said Mohawks head coach Quinn Skelton. “We knew this was going to be a tough game, and it was for sure no cakewalk. We played a good game of football, and it was good enough to come out on top.”
The Mohawks struck on their first drive of the game with a field goal, and carried that lead into the final minutes of the second quarter, where running back Tanner Winter scored the first of his three touchdowns on the evening, putting the Mohawks up 10-0 going into the half.
“Getting up before the half was huge for us,” said Skelton. “Anytime you can take a lead into the half, you’re going to take it. Our defence was able to stop them for the first half of the game, and that gave us some momentum going into the second half there.”
After the half, the Buffalos attack was able to put up 12 points in the second half, but the Mohawks offence was able to match, putting up 14 points of their own.
“We knew they were going to come at us hard,” said Skelton. “They have a really great team, and their running back is one of the best in the province. We had to stop them, and we knew 10 points wasn’t going to be good enough against a team of that caliber.”
The Mohawks will travel to Lethbridge next week to play for the Zone Championships.
