Former Medicine Hat alderman Graham Kelly has been appointed as the new chair of the Medicine Hat College Board of Governors.

The provincial government confirmed the appointment Thursday with an Order in Council release from the Honourable Marlin Schmidt, Minister of Advanced Education. Kelly will be joined by fellow new appointees Deborah Lloyd, Mohammed Idriss, Davin Carter and J. Kelly Garland.

Kelly said Thursday he was excited to be returning to public life in this new capacity.

“This will certainly be different than being an alderman,” said Kelly. “This will have a lot more kinship with the years I spent teaching at Medicine Hat High and as an administrator in the school district. My particular perception of Medicine Hat College at this point in time is it is an astounding institution which does a fabulous job serving students and the community. I want to play a part in continuing that.”

Kelly called Medicine Hat College a “tremendous asset to the community,” which “offers exciting programs” to its students. He said he and his fellow board members will be resolute in their commitment to enhancing and strengthening of the college in the region and community.

“An institution of higher learning has to maintain its relevancy, and be keeping up with changes in technology and changes in society in terms of employment and what people want from an educational institution,” said Kelly. “That’s a challenge, and it’s an exciting challenge which I am looking forward to.”
