Rock Ramblings: Easy last-minute Halloween costumes

By Medicine Hat News on October 19, 2017.

I love Halloween. The trick or treating, Halloween parties and, of course, dressing up is always a blast. Each year I always have these grand ideas of costumes and then before I know it, I have procrastinated on ordering a costume and with less than two weeks to go I scramble to come up with something. Some years the grand plan does come together like a couple years ago when my friends and I went as the Sanderson sisters from “Hocus Pocus.” This year, however, looks like I’ll be scrambling.

My husband isn’t a huge fan of dressing up and is the king of simple, last minute DIY. Last year he had probably the easiest costume I have ever seen. He put a leaf on a string and taped it to the brim of a ball cap so the leaf was in front of his face. When people asked him what he was, he blew on the leaf and said he was a leaf blower. Quite a punny little costume.

Whether you were too busy getting your kids’ costumes together, don’t really like dressing up or maybe you’re like me and just dropped the ball, whatever your reason, I have put together a list of some pretty simple, last-minute costumes, some punny, some not, that you could put together for this year.

A Slash costume is super easy to put together. For this all you really need is the curly black wig, black shades and of course the top hat. You might luck out at one of the dollar stores and find all three of those things. Other than that, throw on a pair of skinny jeans, a shirt from any rock concert and some of the jewelry in your house.

Why not become part of the proverbial phrase “When life gives you lemonsÉ” For this one just go out and grab yourself a white shirt. Get either iron on letters or a mark and write LIFE on the shirt. Pick up some lemons from your local grocery store and then literally just walk around and hand them out at parties. Bet you get a couple of double takes.

Another easy one where all you need is a shirt and maybe a prop is a ceiling fan. Grab a shirt and write ceiling fan on the chest. From there you can add whatever you like, like maybe some pom poms. Whatever you do, the goal is to walk around saying things like “go ceiling!” and “Ceiling you’re No. 1!” Get it?

Another simple rock inspired costume that’s perfect for a couple is Wayne and Garth from “Wayne’s World.” My husband and I did this one a few years ago. Since my hair is long and brown obviously I got to be Wayne. I wore a plain black t-shirt with ripped jeans and a black hat that I taped the Wayne’s World logo to. To turn my husband into Garth, we went to the local Halloween store and found him the wig and glasses. Other than that we picked clothes we already had at home and voila!, a couple of your favourite movie music lovers.

And finally the absolute easiest on the list is perfect for those who don’t want to dress up at all. Literally all you have to do is write book somewhere on your face. When people ask you why you have book on your face simply say you’re face book.

Hopefully some of my quick ideas have inspired you. Now don’t wait until the morning of Oct. 31 to put these together. The 30th is more realistic.
