The new Tim Hortons at Strachan Corner is already open for business while construction continues on many other buildings on site.
Construction of a 7-Eleven, gas bar and car wash on the corner closest to Staples is on track with the building to be handed over at the end of October, said Tim Hinch, site superintendent of Petrocom Construction Ltd recently.
The steel beams for the Save-on-Foods supermarket has already given shape to the overall design.
The old Walmart building on site was demolished earlier this year on the 13-acre site across the road from Home Depot, making way for the new building.
A number of factors went into the decision to demolish the old Walmart building. Consultants looked at the pros and cons of salvaging compared to demolition and came to the conclusion there was no benefit to keeping it, Steven McPhee, vice president of Brentwood Developments in Edmonton, told the News. There was also some deterioration of the building after standing empty since 2008, when Walmart moved to its current location further east on Strachan Road.
The development of the site includes buildings around the perimeter with parking in the centre. There will also be a Liquor Depot.
Brentwood Developments website has a schematic showing how Strachan Corner is likely to look after development. According to the website the plan is still to open the development this year with more than 125,000 square feet of new retail space.
