A 13-year-old youth has been charged with uttering death threats after police were made aware of a threat on social media involving a local school.

Medicine Hat police report that on Oct. 10, they were made aware of the threat which was posted by a male student the prior night. Police identified the student and attended the school to locate him. The immediate threat was resolved and there was no disruption of the normal school day, said police.

As per their protocol, the school activated a “Violent Threat Risk Assessment” in response to the threat, which is in place to respond to all situations in which students may be posing a threat to themselves or others.

Parents of students in the Medicine Hat Catholic School Division were notified of the incident by a letter sent home with all students in the division at the end of the school day.
