A 25-year-old Medicine Hat man charged with dangerous driving causing death for a Sept. 11 incident that left an 18-year-old woman dead had a brief court appearance Tuesday.
Cody David Michell remains in custody, and since his last court appearance has obtained counsel — he is being represented by Lethbridge-based lawyer Greg White. While Tuesday’s appearance at the Medicine Hat Courthouse had originally been set for a bail hearing, White instead requested an adjournment to Oct. 24.
As reported by the Medicine Hat police, Michell is accused of stealing a pickup truck on the afternoon of Sept. 11, fleeing in it at a high rate of speed, causing a collision at the intersection of 12th Street NE and Division Avenue, continuing driving down 12th Street at an extreme speed and colliding with a Toyota Camry at Parkview Drive. The 18-year-old female driver of the Camry was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect was taken to hospital, and police reported that during treatment he attempted to pull an officer’s pistol from the holster, but was prevented from doing and brought under control by the officer and medical staff.
Alongside the dangerous driving causing death charge, Michell faces charges of failure to stop at the scene of an accident, possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of stolen property under $5,000 and attempting to disarm a police officer.
