The final stage of a lengthy downtown road construction process is about to get underway, city municipal works officials said Wednesday.

However, traffic entering the downtown core will be diverted up Hill Road and then through the Southeast Hill residential neighbourhood until the third week of October.

Crews will begin blocking off the intersection of South Railway Street and Fifth Street on Monday, after months of replacing pipe sewers and roadway along the busy stretch.

Phases have been opened along the way from Second Street southward, and last weekend a major portion was given its final lift of pavement.

The final stage is at Fifth and South Railway, which blocks northbound traffic from directly entering the core.

The department states that traffic will be routed up Hill Road to Fifth Avenue, then to Dundee Street onto Sixth Avenue for entry to downtown. At the same time, some sections of South Railway Street north of construction will return to two-way traffic.

Third Street will return to one-way and Fourth will be reopened as a two-way street.
