South Country Co-op is again expanding its presence in the local agricultural supply sector and is doing in it in the far southeast of the province.

The co-operative retailer states in a release it has come to terms to purchase the Ag Plus Supply outlet in Foremost, making it the latest in a string of expansions.

Carrie Butterwick and her husband Warren had owned the outlet since late 2001, and she said Wednesday the couple felt South Country would be a good fit for the community.

“It’s a family business and one of the main drivers for us in discussion with Co-op was what we saw as their commitment to smaller towns,” said Butterwick.

“It’s a good move for us, a good move for Co-op and good for Foremost.”

The release from South Country general manager Mike Clement states the entity is excited to welcome employees and clients of the outlet.

“Investing in southern Alberta’s agriculture community is positioning South Country Co-op for future success,” the statement reads. “It shows true commitment to the communities in which (producers) reside.”

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Foremost becomes South Country’s 10th Agro location, along with outlets in Medicine Hat, Oyen, Lethbridge, Brooks, Vauxhall, Barons, Claresholm, High River and Lomond.

This summer the co-operative retailer opened new administration offices in Medicine Hat. Locally, a new gas bar and convenience store strip mall development is in early construction near Strachan Road.
