Brooks-area teenager drowns in Lake Newell on Tuesday

A Brooks-area teenager has drowned in Lake Newell.

According to the RCMP report on the incident, the Brooks Fire Department and local EMS responded to a report of a drowning 16-year-old male at about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday afternoon at Kinbrook Island Provincial Park near the main beach area at Lake Newell.

Witnesses at the scene reported the youth had been floating in the lake on a personal flotation device when he appeared to jump off into the lake. The male showed clear signs of distress prior to going under the water.

South Eastern Alberta Search and Rescue, the Medicine Hat Fire Department’s Aquatic Rescue Team, Brooks Fire Department, HALO Air Ambulance, and Alberta Parks were all on scene to assist with the incident. The boy’s body was eventually recovered and the family has been notified.
