Medicine Hat High School is ready to open the doors and let everyone see its new look.
The school is holding an open house tonight at 7 p.m. for anyone curious about its nearly-finished renovation project, and principal Boris Grisonich says he cannot wait to see people’s reactions.
“There’s a lot to like, and a lot to be excited about,” he said. “Everything we’ve wanted to do we’ve pretty much been able to do. I don’t think I could pick a favourite or a thing I’m most excited for. I think the students telling me what they like will determine what I like the most.”
The event will run until 9 p.m., and Grisonich says it is not just for students to see their new school, but for anyone in the community to take part in.
“We’ve had so many people involved with this project that we just wanted to let anyone come tomorrow (Tuesday) and walk around,” he said. “While it will be great for kids that want to come to Hat High, we have a lot of alumni here who I know what to see the new school and we have a lot of neighbours that have suffered through the construction for the last year and a half who want to see why they had to suffer. We just really want to show it off and we’re looking forward to seeing peoples’ faces as they walk through for the first time.”
Registration for the school year is ongoing, with classes starting Sept. 5. Grisonich says the school is worried it may have too many trying to register.
“Typically we get around 100 kids who register around the last week of August. We’re concerned that with the new building we’re going to get a lot more than that,” he said. “We’re encouraging students to come early so they don’t miss out on classes because they’re filled up.”
The total cost for the Hat High renovation project was roughly $43 million. Grisonich says the school will be looking to fundraise about $700,000 to complete the second half of the new indoor running track.
