One man is facing multiple charges after the Medicine Hat Police Service identified and dismantled a bicycle chop shop in the city.
According to a press release, on Thursday, members of the Priority Street Crimes Unit executed a search warrant in the 600 block of Pottery St. SE and seized approximately $3,000 worth of bikes, frames, tires, rims and parts that had been stripped down, repainted and re-assembled for sale.
The 34-year-old man is in custody awaiting a bail hearing and facing charges of: trafficking in stolen property, possession for the purpose of trafficking in stolen property and breach of recognizance
As a reminder to the public, police are encouraging people to take proactive steps:
· Record your bicycle’s serial number and maintain a record of the serial number at home.
· Take a photo of your bike to assist with identification in the event it is missing.
· Use a lock that suits your needs –A small, lightweight cable lock is usually good enough for quick mid-ride stops. If you’re leaving your bike unattended all day, a heavy-duty chain that provides maximum security is recommended.
· Lock your bike and frame to an immovable object – For maximum security, your lock cable or chain should be long enough to wrap around the bike’s frame, both wheels, and whatever you are locking your bike to.
