This weekend marked the biggest of the year for local horseshoe throwers.
The Medicine Hat Horseshoe Club held its annual tournament, hosting throwers from all over the province for two days of competitive horseshoes.
“We’re having a nice tournament, with lots of locals and people from all around the province,” said the club’s secretary and treasurer Lloyd Doucette. “We’ve got great weather, and have even had some spectators out to watch. There is a large event going on out east, which means there’s a few less people out, but we still have a really good turnout.”
The club has more than 20 players who turn out to play one to three times each week and Doucette said the local horse shoe community is strong.
“We have a lot of really good people and throwers in our local group,” he said. “We have more than 20 people out usually a few times each week to play singles and doubles. We’re always looking for new people to come out, but we do have a good group for our community size.”
One of the big reasons the club is able to host a tournament with four divisions, cash prizes and host people from all over Alberta is the new playing area the club worked to create with the help of the city.
“Our facilities are top notch,” Doucette said. “The city supplied asphalt, lights and plastic pits. After the big floods we were left homeless, with no where to play. Some of the members worked with the city to get us this playing area and it couldn’t be better — we even have lights to play at night.”
Saturday’s first place winners in the Mixed A, Mixed B, Mixed C, and Mixed D divisions were Jerry Riemann of Lethbridge,Larry Fassnidge of Medicine Hat, Harvey Frey of MedicineHat, and Bob Muskovich of Lethbridge, respectively.
Sunday first place winners of these divisions were Alvin Nanninga of Spruce Grove;a three-way tie of Vern Koenig, Larry Fassnidge and Phil Getz; Alfred Hansen of Lethbridge; and Tom Fry of MedicineHat.
