Dubeau excited to run hockey camp

There are lots of summer hockey and skating schools out there, but few feature appearances by both an NHL referee and an ex-NHL player.

Platinum Star Power Skating’s Gay Dubeau hopes her local connections to the pro ranks will make her first week-long hockey school a hit.

“I try to be innovative, there are 10 hockey school camps in Medicine Hat alone,” said Dubeau, whose school runs Aug. 8-12 at the Family Leisure Centre. “You have to put good stuff out there. We’re trying our best.”

Dubeau has a distinguished history of working with the city’s best skaters —whether that’s in figure skating or hockey. Among those appearing at the hockey school are ex-NHLer Stefan Meyer and current NHL referee Chris Schlenker, plus ex-WHLers Jerrid Sauer and Brett Bartman.

Meyer logged 20 NHL games between the Florida Panthers and Calgary Flames before moving on to a successful career in Europe, while Schlenker just finished his first full season as an NHL official.
