A Brooks man charged with manslaughter in the death of his girlfriend was arraigned on those charges Friday at the Court of Queen’s Bench in Medicine Hat. Jessie Robert Dyck, 26, pled not guilty, and will be back on court July 21 to have his trial date set.

A preliminary hearing was held in Brooks earlier this year, which remains under a publication ban. Dyck elected during those proceedings to be tried before a judge and jury, which meant the trial had to be moved to Medicine Hat.

Dyck was originally arrested and charged with aggravated assault on Feb. 19, after what was described as a domestic violence incident at his Brooks residence. Police and paramedics were called to the home after a report of a woman suffering from severe injuries. Upon arrival they found Tanya Campbell-Losier, 19, who was transported to a Calgary hospital and later died.

Following his arrest, Dyck was granted bail on a $20,000 surety and $5,000 cash — and on strict release conditions, including maintaining an address in Saskatchewan, nightly curfew, surrendering his passport, abstaining from alcohol and not being allowed to attend the city of Brooks with the exception of court appearances.
