Athletes young and old doing well at summer games in Brooks

Hundreds of Medicine Hat and Cypress County athletes are in Brooks this weekend for the Southern Alberta Summer Games, and dozens had already won medals in the annual games’ opening two days.

As of Friday morning Cypress had a total of 63 medals and Medicine Hat 60 —both trailing the host County of Newell’s 241 and Lethbridge’s 102.

Most of them have come on the track, though many specific medal results weren’t known by press time.

Phyllis Chow (50-59 women) and Barney Cunningham (60-plus men) each won their 10 kilometre run division.

Hannah Round won bantam girls 800 and 1,500 metre, was third in the 400.

Olivia Callaghan —who had a stellar high school season — dominated with gold in the junior girls 100, 200, long and triple jump.

Kathy Scrivener won the masters women’s 400 metre and was second in the 100. Also in the masters division, Samuel Seotimo won both the 50 and 200 metre men’s events, plus the long jump.

Phil Bosch won masters plus men’s long jump and was second in the 50 metre dash. MaryAnn Westgard won her masters plus javelin and was second in shot put.

Adriene Campbell was a double-gold medallist in mighty mite 100 and 400 metre, plus took second in long jump. Olivia Chendar won the 50 metre race, was second in the 100 and high jump and third in ball throw and long jump.

Zaynna Willoughby was third in peewee 200 and 800 metre. Zachary Campbell won the youth 400.

In cribbage Larry Peers took second in singles.

Cypress County

Leading the way for Cypress County was Ryann Plaksey, the the 11-and-under girls five kilometre winner. She also won the peewee 800 metre race.

Austin Siewert won the 11-and-under boys three kilometre run.

Waylan Watson won the bantam boys 1,500 metre event.

Trey Plaksey was third in mighty mite 400 metre. Other bronze medallists were Landon Schmaltz (peewee boys high jump) and Camryn Burgevitz (peewee girls high jump).

In golf, Lloyd Suderman took the men’s 55-and-over gold medal.

The county also had several medals in photography. Justin Jager won for 12-under people, Kassidy Hart for 12-under sport and outdoors, Natasha Jager for 13-17 my home town (she was second in outdoors) and Shauna Fockler for 18-over animal (she was second in sport and digital manipulation).

Cypress’ open pairs cribbage team also brought home a gold.
