BREAKING: Porfoun pleads out to manslaughter

By Scott Schmidt on June 21, 2017.

One of two Medicine Hat men charged with second-degree murder after a November 2016 homicide pled out Wednesday to manslaughter and was sentenced to six and a half years in prison.
With days served due to pretrial custody, Jacob Peter Porfoun, 22, has five years and 205 days left to serve.
The sentencing was handed down at the Medicine Hat Courthouse by Judge G. R. Debow, although a publication ban means that Porfoun’s involvement in the homicide can’t be printed, as charges against his co-accused Aaron Raj Anand Ford aren’t resolved, and could be going to trial.
The pair were charged following the early-morning death of 24-year-old Dustin Hewer on Nov. 5, 2016 in the 500 block of 21st Street N.E. Porfoun was taken into custody at the scene, while Anand-Ford was arrested soon after without incident following a manhunt by police.
Autopsy information released by police stated that “sharp force injury” was the cause of death.
Both accused have been in custody since the incident, with Porfoun held at the Medicine Hat Remand Centre, and Anand-Ford in Calgary.
Anand-Ford’s next appearance is set for June 28, at which point a preliminary inquiry will either be waived or set.
