WALTER, Kenneth (Ken)
The family is saddened to announce the passing of Kenneth (Ken) Benjamin Walter of Medicine Hat and formerly of Jenner, on Saturday, April 29, 2017. Ken was born July 9, 1948 in Medicine hat, attended school in Jenner and graduated from Medicine Hat High School. After graduation he worked summers in the oil patch. His ambition was to become a diplomat so he attended the University of Calgary, enrolled in the bachelor of arts program. In 1970, after his uncle Emil died, he returned to the farm at Jenner and ranch north of Suffield. In partnership with his parents, Ken worked to develop a quality herd of cattle and was dedicated to preserving the family’s operation. He stayed close to home, except for the occasional fishing trip and hunting for deer in the fall. When the children came along, Ken was more inspired to build the herd and the ranching operation. He was proud of his enviable herd of tan Charolais cattle that buyers sought out and paid premium at auction. He was very pleased that a Calgary area ranch bought 60 head of replacement heifers every year. In 1993 he moved to Medicine Hat to get Karl closer to better hockey coaching, but continued to run the farm and ranch operation from Medicine Hat. Ken never lost his love of the prairie area where he was raised, making frequent visits even after renting the farm. In his last few years, the grandchildren and extended family were his focus. He liked nothing more than watching them while at the lake. He fought multiple illnesses for the last five years. Ken was predeceased by his parents, Ben and Nelma Walter, maternal and paternal grandparents, several aunts, uncles and cousins. He is survived by his beloved companion Vernice Rissling; his stepdaughter, Shauna (Reno) Facchin, two sons, Karl (Jammie) Walter and Kurtis (Cora) Walter all of Medicine Hat; Vernice’s children, Nicole (Trevor) Stratton and Crystal Rissling (Tyler Nolan) all of Medicine Hat; his grandchildren, Keneel, Jericho, Jerzy, Channing, Jonathan, Alysha, Madison and Courtney; one brother Ron (Joyce) Walter of Moose Jaw; his aunt Phyllis (Vern) Gehring and several cousins and numerous friends.
Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Tuesday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and on Wednesday from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. with Life Celebrant, David Townsend. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes or to the charity of your choice.
