A 30-day extension has been granted for assessment on whether a Medicine Hat man facing second-degree murder charges is criminally responsible for his actions.

Noah Harrison Bentley, 26, appeared before the Medicine Hat provincial court Wednesday by CCTV from the Calgary Remand Centre, with Judge Darwin Greaves granting an additional 30 days of assessment. This was with the consent of the Crown, the accused, at the request of defence due to a request from the forensic centre where the assessment is taking place.

The assessment was originally granted on Jan. 31, with a publication ban issued on defence counsel’s submissions for why an assessment is needed, to “protect the administration of justice” should the case move forward and be tried by jury.

Bentley was charged Nov. 12, 2016 following the death of Brenda Woloski.

He has been in custody since, and has not yet had a bail hearing. Bentley has not yet entered a plea to the charge.

His next court appearance is now set for March 30.
