1921 ~ WILLIAM WESTLAND ~ 2017 William "Bill" Westland was born in Bow Island on October 13th, 1921 and resided in Medicine Hat until his passing on January 23rd, 2017. He was predeceased by his wife, Helen; a daughter, Shirley Dowler; one granddaughter, Lorrie Dowler; and two great-grandchildren, Brentley and Shandi Dowler. Dad worked all his life in Medicine Hat for the Public Works and the majority of his career at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital as a nursing orderly in the operating room until his retirement at age 55. For many years, he served as a representative for C.U.P.E. Local 189 where he was involved in negotiating for the union at a provincial level. Dad enjoyed growing flowers and gardening at his own home until his health would no longer permit him to do so. He then took up residence at Sunnyside Nursing Home until his passing. Dad is survived by one son, Jim (Gail); son-in-law, Carl Dowler; as well as five grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by many friends and family members. Very special thanks goes to the staff at the Haven Villa who so compassionately took care of him during his failing years. The Graveside Service will be held at HILLSIDE CEMETERY, 10th Avenue and Gershaw Drive SW, on Thursday, January 26th, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Bob Findley officiating. 1927 ~ KEITH BENNETT ~ 2017
With heavy hearts the family announces the passing of Keith Leon Bennett at the age of 89 years on Friday, January 20th, 2017 with his loving family at his side. Keith was predeceased by his dear wife, Lillian on September 17th, 2015; they shared 65 years together. Keith leaves to cherish his memory his four children, Linda Keith, Carol (Jim) Hintz, Peggy Wester (Grant Thompson), and Calvin (Michele) Bennett; 14 grandchildren, Mark (Karina) Backer, Dean (Amanda) Ressler, Kristin (Warren) Senft, Jason Reeder (Carrie), Aaron Hintz, Carmen Hintz, Derek Hintz (Devon), Bradley Wester (Katie), Stephen Wester (Leslie), Kelly Wester (Larissa), Shane (Andrea) Bennett, Sharrese (Adam) Dovichak, Shaun Bennett, and Shayla Bennett (Joshua); four step-grandchildren, Brittney (Austin) LaBranche, Jared (Jennifer) Thompson, Delman Thompson, and Jenica Thompson; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Roger (Janice) Bennett; sister-in-law, Lori Bennett; brother-in-law, Donald Hunter (Joan Hogan); sister-in-law, Donna Hunter; as well as many special nieces and nephews. Keith was born in Magrath, AB on September 24th, 1927. Keith had a very adventurous spirit and when he was in Grade 11 he decided to head out on his own to explore the world, horses and cattle became his passion! He worked for many ranchers breaking horses, milking cows and moving cattle. He loved being on a horse and could name each and everyone of them. Eventually his career changed to being an agent buying grain for the Alberta Wheat Pool. The highlight of his younger years was when he met Lillian Hunter. They fell in love and were married on June 17th, 1950. During their early years of marriage, there was an opening for a position with the Medicine Hat City Police Department and Keith was hired. An amazing 34 years on the force, retiring as "Inspector Bennett". His loving wife Lillian was always there to support his career. They spent many hardworking years together building their future and raising their children. Grandchildren arrived and life was perfect because the more they had, the more they loved. In 2012 Keith and Lillian decided to move to Chinook Village. After Lillian's passing in 2015, Keith was diagnosed with ALS in March of 2016. With more care needed, he moved to Riverview Care Center where he lived out his last months. As a family, we are extremely proud to call this fantastic man Dad, Father-in-law, Grandpa (G-pa, Papa), Great Grandfather, Brother, Brother-in-law, Uncle and of course, Friend. A special thank you to the staff at Riverview Care Center and also to the ALS Society for all the loving care and support they gave to our dad! Dad, we will miss your smile, your hugs, your happy teasing, the chats we had, your support and unconditional love. We're so happy you have been reunited with mom. We're not saying good bye…….we're just saying "until we're together again". 1942 ~ JOSEPH THIEL ~ 2017 Joseph "Joe" Maurice Thiel, beloved husband of Sharon Thiel of Redcliff, passed away on Friday, January 20th, 2017 at the age of 74 years. Joe also leaves to cherish his memory one daughter, Sheila Thiel; one brother, George (Gladys) Thiel; one sister, Mildred Garuik (Walter Klippenstein); as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Joe was predeceased by his parents, Maurice and Perpetua (Bella) Thiel; two brothers, William Thiel and James Thiel; and one sister, Anna Thiel. Joe was born on June 18th, 1942 in Weyburn, Saskatchewan and was raised in Tribune, Saskatchewan. He married Sharon Nimegeer on May 28th, 1966 in Halbrite, Saskatchewan and moved to Redcliff in July 1966. He worked at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital as a Nursing Orderly for 15 years before working as a mechanic, retiring in 2002. Joe enjoyed fishing, camping, reading, playing games and face-timing his brother and sister. He will be missed by all those who knew and loved him. CHARTRAND Donald Edward Chartrand, 57, of Medicine Hat, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, January 19, 2017. Don is survived by Sheila, his friend and wife for 36 years; daughter Lindsay (Taz) Kassou, and son Jeremy. Ruby Rataushk passed away January 11 in Calgary, Alberta exactly 7 months after the death of her beloved husband John Rataushk. Ruby was born on February 1, 1926 in Medicine Hat, the youngest child of Johanna (Annie) Esslinger and John Faas. She was the baby of the family and she was the last of her family to pass on. Ruby met and married her childhood sweetheart, John Rataushk, in Medicine Hat and dedicated the next 72 years to him and their children. Throughout their life together, Ruby worked hard to keep a spotless home filled with the wonderful aromas of her supremely delicious baked goods. Although she moved to Calgary in the 1960s, Ruby always loved Medicine Hat best, and she dreamed of moving back. Ruby leaves her son Ken Rataushk and his wife Jan (Wallens) of Calgary; son Wes Rataushk and his wife Sydne (Smith) of Kirkland, Washington; her loving grandchildren Kimberly (Rataushk) Slater and her husband Jeff Slater, Kelsey Rataushk, Riley Rataushk, and Carly Rataushk; and her great grandson Logan Slater.

SCHNEIDMILLER, IRENE On Monday January 9, 2017 Irene Schneidmiller passed away at the age of 92, at the Kelowna General Hospital in Kelowna, British Columbia. She was born on February 28, 1924 in Thelma, Alberta to John and Dorothy Schock. Irene is survived by her three children Dona Frayn of Kelowna, B.C., Garry (Linda) Schneidmiller of Bonnyville, Alta. and Victoria (Bryan) Hamilton of Calgary, Alta; two brothers Donald (Marlene) Schock of Medicine Hat, Alta. and John (Florence) Schock of Maple Creek, Sask.; five grandchildren, Stacey Frayn, Brent (Sue) Schneidmiller, Blair (Carmen) Schneidmiller, Pamela (Paul) Vandenberg and Bradley Hamilton; four great grandchildren Justin Frayn, Taytum and Torie Schneidmiller and Alyssa Vandenberg; two sisters-in-law Jean Schock and Darlene Schock, Medicine Hat; one brother-in-law Andy Burns, Victoria; along with numerous nieces and nephews. WADE GARIEPY 1942 ~ 2017
It is with sadness that the family announce the sudden passing of their father, Wade Cole Gariepy on Wednesday, January 18, 2017, at the age of 74 years. Wade was born to Sheila and Patrick Gariepy on October 13, 1942, in Edmonton. He married his first wife, Alannah Ronnie in 1962, in Red Deer. Wade later married, Patricia Durk in Red Deer on June 17, 1977. He worked in many fields which included the Oil Rigs, as a Commercial Trucker, Logging and Welding Procedure Specifications. Wade furthered his education and received his Electronic Technician certificate at Lethbridge College. He was the most caring and spiritual man one could meet and once you met him, you never forgot him. Wade enjoyed making people laugh and he loved flirting with the ladies! He loved to watch movies especially John Wayne westerns, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings as well as the TV series NCIS. Puzzles and tending to his yard were some of his greatest passions. Wade and Pat enjoyed their community and became involved in the Kennel Club and the Suffield Community Recreation Association. They both loved animals, dogs and cats alike; starting with Wade’s first puppy, Chubby, Shorty, Ace and Dutches; Poppy the horse, and the Beagles, Buffy, Laska, Zoey, Trouble and Stewie. Wade’s memory will be forever treasured in the hearts of his children; Dirk Gariepy, his son Cole and his children, Mackenzie, Adele and Eian; Lance Gariepy, Dahrlyne (Micheal) Gariepy; three step-children, Randy (Janet) Ross, their children, Melissa, Danielle, her son Blake; Jacquie (Tim) Cook, their children, Jordan and Sabrina; Curtis (Kyla) Ross, their children, Trey, Walker and Cooper. Wade is also survived by his siblings, Judy Caldwell and Randy Gariepy and their families. He helped raise several children throughout the years including, Aidan Watson, Alexis and her son, Rowan Watson. Wade was predeceased by his wife, Patricia Gariepy; parents, Patrick and Sheila Gariepy (nee McKay).
