1931 ~ LIGHTFOOT ~ 2016
Melva Judith Lightfoot of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Howard Lightfoot, passed away on Tuesday, October 18th, 2016 at the age of 85 years. Melva leaves to cherish her memory one son, Gary Lightfoot of Calgary; one daughter, Shirley Walsh of Medicine Hat; six grandchildren, Brandy (Greg) Schwenk, Stacey (Jason) Zurburg, Kristin (Craig) Noonan, Skylar (Kristen) Walsh, Cameron Lightfoot and Derrick Lightfoot; nine great grandchildren, Piper, Makiya, Chase, Damon, Keelyn, Rocklin, Ava, Nate and Adelaide; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Melva was predeceased by her husband, Howard Lightfoot; her parents, Peter and Josephine Hatlen; two brothers, Jens Hatlen and Ken Hatlen; and her best friend, Sheila Lucks. Melva was born on July 28th, 1931 in Camrose, Alberta. She moved around Alberta and Saskatchewan while her dad worked with the CNR. Melva completed a business course in Vermilion before moving to Edmonton where she met Howard. She then moved with Howard when he gained employment with DRES. Melva worked in Ralston at a coffee shop and as a payroll clerk at CFB Suffield. They retired to Redcliff and eventually Medicine Hat, where Melva enjoyed curling, darts, VLT's, bingo and spending time with friends at the Moose Lodge. A Private Graveside Service will take place at Saamis Prairie View Cemetery with Reverend Dennis Betker officiating. Gotlieb Edwin "Gus" Nitz of Medicine Hat, beloved husband of Irene Nitz, passed away on Saturday, October 15th, 2016 at the age of 83 years. He leaves to cherish his memory five children, Darlene (David) Tessman, Medicine Hat, Brenda (Bill) Rose of Vernon, British Columbia, Dean Nitz of Medicine Hat, Charlene (John) Grona of Strathmore, Mary (Steve) Seitz of Medicine Hat; ten granddaughters, Lynn (Jonas) Wells, Erin (Jason) Straarup, Michelle (Cameron) Dakin, Shauna Rose (Chris), Darnyll (Lance) Nitz-Jacober, Shareen Nitz (Justin), Christa Grona (Mike), Kayla Grona (Nathaniel), Lisa (Josh) Crawford and Stephanie Seitz (Sam); ten great grandchildren, Jonah, Kaylem, Ryler, Avery, Ashlyn, Austin, Aeon, Zaidin, and Ethan; two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Annie (Harvey) Sackman, and Georgina (Morris) Stenger; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Gus was predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Katherine Nitz; one daughter-in-law, Charlene Nitz: one brother, Frederick Nitz; one sister, Gertrude (Bill) Drefs; one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Evelyn (Mike) Kobly; and mother and father-in-law, Pauline and Valentine Bischoff. Gus was a kind, loving father who loved to spend time with his family and friends. Gus worked hard and was an excellent provider for his family. He was an amazing crafts person and could do almost anything that he put his mind to. Gus was a great cook and loved canning. Music was an important aspect of Gus's life and he learned to play instruments by ear. Gus will also be remembered for his beautiful blue eyes and love of telling jokes. Gus retired from his employment at the Saint Mary’s River Irrigation District at the age of 57. Mary A. Hornung passed away on Sunday, October 16, 2016, at the age of 95 years, beloved wife of the late Lawrence P. Hornung. She leaves to cherish her memory five children: Lorraine (Vic) Baron of Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan; Elgin (Sylvia) Hornung of Medicine Hat; Sandra Hornung of Ottawa; Randy (Nola) Hornung of Calgary; and Marion (Stuart) Warrener of Saskatoon; nineteen grandchildren; thirty-five great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; two sisters: Margaret Beitel of Moose Jaw, Betty (Bruce) Patterson of Burlington, Ontario; and one brother Jules (Jodi) of Edmonton. She was predeceased by her parents, Anton and Catherine Rach; her husband Lawrence, her daughter and son-in-law, Geraldine and Laverne Sparrow, her son Keith Hornung, and nine brothers and sisters. Mary was born in Spring Valley, Saskatchewan on October 17, 1920 and taught for a year in a small country school prior to her marriage to Lawrence in 1940. Together they farmed at Glen Bain, Saskatchewan until 1965 when they retired to Medicine Hat. Mary moved into St. Joseph's Home in Medicine Hat in 2000 where she enjoyed the friendship of the Carmelite Sisters, in particular Sister Mary Rita and Sister Mary Peter, Wanda and all the staff, and the residents. When she required additional care a year ago she moved to Masterpiece. The caring and compassionate staff made the transition easy. Mary's passion was sewing, crocheting and knitting – she hand stitched over 500 quilts and made many afghans, slippers and handicrafts that are the cherished possessions of each and every child and grandchild. She was an active member of the Veiner Centre for many years – calling bingo, playing cards and assisting with other events. Mary enjoyed travelling to spend time with children and grandchildren and other holidays with her sisters. She will be remembered by her children and grandchildren, and grandchildren she most particularly for her quilts, babysitting and homemade buns. Her faith provided her strength, comfort and joy throughout her life. The service will be held in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. with Fr. Francis Tran officiating. KAMMERER
It is with sadness that the family announce the passing of Syl Kammerer on Oct 18th at the age of 83.
Syl leaves behind his wife Tina, sons Doug (Debbie), Murray (Cindy) daughter Peggy Steiert (Ralph), four granddaughters, Eli, Laura, Tara and Coralee, one grandson Jeff, one great granddaughter Preslee, two sisters, Irene and Anne and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Leo and Mary, four brothers, Tony, John, Gordon and Jerome and grandson Andrew Kammerer.
Syl was born on February 22, 1933 on the family farm near Salvador, Saskatchewan. He worked on the farm throughout his youth, and after high school graduation went to work at the Royal Bank. While working at the bank and seeing the pay cheques of some of the area oil rig workers, his career path changed for the remainder of his working life. While following the ever changing “oil patch” to different towns, Syl met and fell in love with Tina Wiebe in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. They were married on November 1, 1955. After a number of moves to various towns and cities in Alberta and Saskatchewan, Syl and Tina eventually settled in Medicine Hat in 1974. Syl continued to work in the oil and gas industry up until his retirement in 1990.
The family would like to thank the staff of Sunny Side nursing home for the care they have shown Syl over the last couple of years.

MARGARET DRESCHER
1939 ~ 2016
Margaret Mary Florence Drescher passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice, Medicine Hat on Tuesday, October 18, 2016, at the age of 77 years. Margaret was born on February 17, 1939, in Vantage, SK., where she was raised as well as in Mossbank, SK. Margaret married Martin Drescher on June 1, 1957, in Medicine Hat where they raised their family. She was a loving, caring and considerate wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She loved to play bingo, cards and do crafts, such as making quilted pillows and flower arrangements. Margaret will also be remembered by her famous jumbo raisin cookies. Until recently, she enjoyed watching baseball and loved to cheer for the Blue Jays. Margaret cherished special family gatherings with her children and grandchildren, as well as other family and friends. She had a smile, big heart and was always willing to give and share what she had. Margaret is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Martin; her eight children; Mike (Sheila) Drescher, Deb (Rod) Lippert, Sherry Nivens, Brenda (Andrew) Tokamp, Dennis (Laurie) Drescher, Greg (Terry) Drescher and Jason (Tash) Drescher; along with her 19 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; siblings, Raymond (Bernie) Leech, Betty Hammel, Joyce Hanson, Linda (Joe) Aitchison, Donna Rockett, as well as many nieces and nephews. Margaret was predeceased by her parents, Beatrice and Robert Leech; brothers, Jimmy and Tommy; sister, Shirley (Richard) Jans; Martin’s parents, Maria and Gregor Drescher. MONDOR
It is with deep sorrow that we announce Gus’ passing at the age of 89 years on Monday, October 17, 2016, in Medicine Hat, in the presence of his family. He leaves to mourn his beloved wife of 67 years, Gertie Mondor as well as his children, Lucille (Glen) Jakubowski, Denis (Darlene Reid) Mondor, Aline (Brent) Boux, and Paulette (John Vangolen) Robbins, also ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his infant son, David (1966); a son-in-law, Colin Robbins (1991), as well as his parents Gabriel and Emelda (Bruneau) Mondor and two of his siblings, Lorenzo Mondor and Florence (Ernest) Ferland.
Gus was born in Willow Bunch, Saskatchewan; he was a farmer even as a young boy; for most of his life he farmed in Dollard, Saskatchewan and was also a grain buyer there until 1975.
He was a most creative handyman. Although not well educated he was wise, clever and very resourceful; a mathematician, mechanic, builder and enjoyed cooking. He was a devoted husband, dad and neighbour. He never said no to any request for help and he always did everything with a keen sense of humour.
He and Gert travelled extensively and loved camping, playing cards, dancing and entertaining. He was extremely social and could meet a new friend around every corner. He was also a proud lifetime Knights of Columbus member. Family and friends will gather for prayers in the PATTISON CHAPEL (540 South Railway Street SE) on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated in Holy Family Parish (1451 Strachan Road SE) on Friday, October 21, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. with Fr.
