Harley Lehr, beloved husband of Celia Lehr of Walsh, passed away on Sunday, September 11th, 2016 at the age of 79 years. Harley also leaves to cherish his memory his sister, Eileen (Harry) Hannan; sisters-in-law, John and Betty Stoesz and Judy Bercik; as well as special nieces, Aimee and Melaina. Harley was predeceased by his parents, Rudolph and Emma Lehr; one brother, Alister Lehr; his father and mother-in-law, Charlie and Nondas Kimola; as well as his sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Leona (Erwin) Hagalof, Charlotte (Allen) Cail, and Paul Kimola. Lorraine Ida Alcock, beloved wife of Mike Alcock of Medicine Hat, passed away on Sunday, September 11th, 2016 at the age of 72 years. Lorraine also leaves to cherish her memory three children, Debra (Blair) Boudreau, Edward "Ed" (Kelly), and Richard "Rick" (Shannon); six grandchildren, Anthony "Tony" (Tiffany) and Tanya Bateman (Paul Gauthier), Samantha and Stephanie Alcock, Corey and Shawn Alcock; five great- grandchildren, Griffen, Desiree, Teagan, Gabriella, and Abigail; one sister, Loretta (Bill) Brown; and one brother-in-law, Al (Lynn) Alcock. CHERNOFF

Marjorie Ellen Chernoff (nee Olson) passed away on the morning of Saturday, September 10, 2016 at St. Joseph’s Home, Carmel Hospice in Medicine Hat at the age of 82 years. Marjorie was born on October 9, 1933 in Carmangay, Alberta. She moved frequently throughout her life, graduating from business college in Lloydminster and working in a variety of places over the years before retiring from the Worker’s Compensation Board in Edmonton. Marjorie spent countless hours volunteering with a variety of organizations, including the United Farm Women of Alberta in Lloydminster, the Daysland Senior Centre, the Medicine Hat Public Library, and the Edmonton and Daysland branches of the Royal Canadian Legion. She loved spending time with her friends and family, enjoyed camping, and was an avid reader. As a senior citizen, Marjorie competed in both bowling and floor curling, and was particularly proud of the cribbage medals she won at the Alberta Senior Games. She was always up for adventure, travelling whenever an opportunity presented itself, renewing her passport for ten more years at the age of 80! Marjorie had a keen sense of humour, loved people, and lived life to its fullest. Marjorie’s six children were the joy of her life. She is survived by five of her children, Sharon (Henry) Westers, Craig (Marie-Anne) Alward, Bruce (Sandy) Alward, Brian (Lauri) Alward, and Dwayne Alward; son-in-law, Shayne Gurney, as well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Joan (Gerald) Breighthaupt and Betty (Robert) McBride; sister-in-law, Marg Olson and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Peggy Gurney; her parents, Jerome and Elsie Olson; her first husband, Donald Alward; her second husband, William “Shiner” Chernoff; her sister, Dorothy Wetenkamp and her brother, Morris Olson. On behalf of the family, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to everyone at St. Joseph’s Home. In Marjorie’s words, “An 82 year journey has now come to an end”. DANIEL W. COCKS

January 18, 1944 – September 6, 2016
It is with sadness that the family of Dan Cocks announces the passing of their husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by the love of his life Elaine, his daughter Tammy (Steve) Krause of Medicine Hat, AB, his son Dan Cocks of Calgary, AB and his grandchild Natasha Krause whom he cherished deeply, his sister Susan (Mic) Moroz of Osoyoos, his brother Jim (Helen) Cocks of Leader, SK, along with aunts, nephews, nieces and cousins. Dan was predeceased by his parents John and Lydia Cocks, brother Doug Cocks, sister Jean Stoltz, and his in-laws Nick and Rose Schafer.
Dan was born in Leader, SK on January 18, 1944 and he married Elaine Schafer on October 16, 1965. Dan and Elaine shared 50+ loving years together. Dan enjoyed fishing, camping and spending time with his family. Dan was always willing to lend a helping hand when people needed him. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who had great pride in his family.
Our family has been blessed throughout this difficult journey to have the support and love from our families and friends.
In honoring Dan’s request, there will be no funeral. A memorial was held on September 11, 2016 with family and friends. Memorial gifts made in Dan’s name can be made to the Heart and Stroke foundation and the Diabetes Association.


GERALD KOENIG

1946 ~ 2016
It is with sadness that the family of Gerald Koenig, beloved husband of Carol Koenig, announce his passing at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Wednesday, September 7, 2016, at the age of 70 years. Gerald was born on August 30, 1946 in the Medicine Hat General Hospital and then moved to Monitor, AB., where he was raised and attended school. On May 31, 1974, Gerald married Carol Rathwell at the Court House in Medicine Hat. He worked as a Gas Field Operator for Atlantic Rich then with Petro Canada as well as Suncor. He was a realist who loved nature and had strong opinions on just about every topic imaginable. Gerald loved camping, big game hunting, fishing, fossil finding and especially spending time with his family. He was a member of the Alberta Fish and Game Association for many years. Gerald’s pride and joy were the births of his children and grandchildren, and he treasured in the fact that he made it to his 70th Birthday retiring with a pension. He had a strong connection to his dogs, Dorian, Tia, Bambie and Choe and in particular, Betsy the Hereford cow. Gerald claimed he was the first of the “Great White Hunters” and lived each day like he was. He will be forever treasured in the hearts of his family, wife, Carol; children, Jason Koenig and his dog, Chevy; Jeremy (Alisha) Koenig and their daughter, Chloe; Jamie (Calvin) Osgood and their daughters, Kailey and Keira. Gerald will also be remembered by his siblings, Vern Koenig of Medicine Hat and Edith (Gary) Onnuseti of Fairport, NY., as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Gerald was predeceased by his parents, John and Nathalia (Dolly) Koenig; and grandson, Chance Koenig. KUMARASWAMY

With heavy hearts, the family of Vijayakumar “VJ” Kumaraswamy, announce his peaceful passing at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, on Thursday, September 8, 2016, at the age of 58 years, following his battle with Cancer. VJ is survived by his beloved wife Leonor and two sons, Krish and Rabi. He was predeceased by his parents Ponniah and Kamalambahi Kumaraswamy. Vijay was born on January 2, 1958, in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. He grew up in a large loving family with five brothers and one sister: Kamalakumar Kumaraswamy (deceased), wife Puwaneswari; Uthayakumar Kumaraswamy, Premkumar Kumaraswamy, wife Josie, Jeyakumari (Alalasundharam – deceased), Balakumar Kumaraswamy, wife Ranji – both deceased, Rajakumar (Nalini). He moved to England in 1978, to pursue an education. In 1980, he moved to London, Ontario, to continue his education. Later that year he moved to Calgary where he began his career and eventual life long passion within the restaurant industry. On March 30, 1985 he married the love of his life Leonor, in Calgary. With great perseverance and dedication he advanced from cook to franchise owner in less than a decade working in both Calgary and Edmonton. Continuing his success, he journeyed to Medicine Hat where he established his long-term home, making a name for himself both in the community and within the Pizza Hut Corporation. Even with several awards, accolades and accomplishments from Pizza Hut, Vijay always strived for continuous improvement. Never shying away from allowing others to take part in his success, Vijay was an advisor, mentor and leader. Entertaining others was one of Vijay’s greatest joys. Whether it be in the form of hosting parties, discussing current affairs, sharing new technology, or even a simple magic trick, he truly had a way of connecting with people. MARTHA ANDERST

June 13, 1923 ~ September 10, 2016

It is with loving hearts that the family of Martha Anderst announce her peaceful passing at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Saturday, September 10, 2016, at the age of 93 years. Martha was born in Medicine Hat on June 13, 1923, a daughter to proud parents, Carl and Carrie Herrmann. She was raised and adopted the values of a hardworking farm girl on the Carl Herrmann Family Farm located south of Schuler. Martha attended the Friedensfeld School and furthered her education at the Christian Training Institute in Edmonton. She met and later married Albert Anderst on July 19, 1946 at Grace Baptist Church in Medicine Hat. They were blessed with six children. As a young girl she developed a deep love for the Lord which she carried throughout her life. Martha was an active member of Friedensfeld Baptist Church while growing up, Hilda Baptist Church from 1946 – 1977 as well as Grace Baptist Church and Hillcrest Evangelical Church in Medicine Hat. She taught Sunday School, served on the Women’s Missionary Fellowship and her voice could be heard singing in the church choirs. Martha was employed as a house cleaner and at the Redcliff Glass Factory during the war years. She was a tireless worker all her life. Family meant everything to her…as a loving mother, grandma and great-grandma, she was a pillar of strength and support for the family. Martha always had a keen interest in the activities of her children and grandchildren and was always there to cheer them on. She had a kind, gentle spirit and warm smile that would light up the room! Martha was a lady who was well liked and offered a valuable gift of friendship to those she met. She had an amazing memory and noted her life by keeping a diary in which she made daily entries for over 50 years! Every occasion, small or great, was memorable to Mom because her love for the Lord and her love for family, friends and people in general. MILES CLEVE MAYER

Miles C. Mayer passed away on Saturday, September 10th, 2016 at the age of 62 years. Miles was born and raised in Medicine Hat. After graduating from MHHS, he obtained a degree in Political Science from McGill University in Montreal. He then obtained his MBA from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, where he met his future wife, Michele. In 1979 he was able to buy his uncle’s ranch near Manyberries and he started his ranching career. For the first few years he also worked off the ranch, teaching Gear Up Financially through the Alberta Government and as a financial consultant for the Federal Government. He raised Black Angus cattle and produced green feed and hay to feed them. He was very well read and kept up with the latest technology. Miles was a wonderful steward of his land and resources, carrying on the traditions of his family. He was a modest, kind man who loved his family and the ranching way of life. He was always ready to help any neighbours. Miles will be greatly missed by his wife, Michele; sons, Lucas and Nathan (Tiffany); sister, Tania Borg (Doug); parents-in-law, George and Dorothy Gauthier; Michele’s siblings, Mary Beveridge (Gary), Teresa Gauthier, Dan Gauthier, Gerard Gauthier (Jane), Cathy Ludlow (Lawrence), and Anne Saftich; aunt, Lillian Hassard; many cousins, nieces and nephews; friends and neighbours.
