ERKER

Margaret Erker, beloved wife of Vincent Erker of Medicine Hat, passed away on Monday, June 13, 2016, at the age of 77. Born in Prelate, Saskatchewan. Margaret was the eldest child of Elizabeth and John A. Heck, who farmed in the Liebenthal area. She attended elementary school at Heg School, also known as "Heck" school as it was located on land donated by her grandfather. Margaret attended high school at St. Angela's Academy in Prelate. Growing up on the farm she became an important part of the farming team at a young age, helping with an array of chores and activities, from baking bread to milking cows. Margaret married Vincent Erker in 1959, setting up house just four miles from where she grew up. The couple raised their family there until they moved to Medicine Hat in 1991. Margaret was a wonderful cook and baker, and she had a well-developed green thumb. She loved tending to her shrubs and flower beds, but was best known for the huge vegetable garden she grew each year while living on the farm, supplying most of the family’s vegetables, with some left to store for the winter. After moving to Medicine Hat, she continued to tend a yard consisting largely of flower beds. After raising her own children, Margaret operated a day home for a number of years, while still finding time to babysit her grandchildren when needed. She was always happiest when her grandchildren would visit. Margaret will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Besides her husband Vincent, she also leaves to cherish her memory: six children, Garry (Wanda) Erker, Janice (Les) Eckert, Dean (Janna) Erker, Michelle (Shawn) Huntington, Darren (Nancy) Erker and Jason Erker; and nine grandchildren, Ryan (Amy) and their children Carson and Kyra; Daniel; Justine; Nolan (Brittany); Jared, Trisha (Martin ); Tasha; Gabriel; Nathaniel; one sister Jeanette (Leon) Eckert; and many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Elizabeth and John A. Heck; one brother Harry Heck, and one sister Irene Laurans. Family and friends will gather for prayers in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated in Holy Family Parish (1451 Strachan Road SE) on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. with Fr. Philip Le, Celebrant. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, NWT & NU, 100 – 119 14 St NW, Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6.
